Description | WASHINGTON -- Judge Sonia Sotomayor appeared poised to become the Supreme Court's first Hispanic justice, with Republican lawmakers suggesting on her final day of testimony that the Senate could vote on her nomination in early August.
Any prospect of a hitch to Judge Sotomayor's confirmation evaporated after the potentially most compelling witness -- Frank Ricci, the firefighter at the center of a controversial reverse-discrimination case she had ruled on -- declined to offer an opinion on her at all. He and fellow New Haven, Conn., firefighter Ben Vargas, criticized the ruling, however.
Judge Sotomayor on Thursday completed her third day of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee without major blunders and with her prospects for confirmation apparently undimmed. She studiously avoided any controversial subjects and disavowed some of her past comments.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) signaled he might vote for her, saying she was "acceptable" to him as a judge, and Sen. Charles Grassley (R., Iowa) inadvertently called her "Justice Sotomayor."
An announcement by the National Rifle Association that it opposes her nomination cast a small cloud, and could influence how some senators from conservative states vote. |
