Description | Former comedian Al Franken became the junior senator from Minnesota Tuesday, taking his oath of office eight months after Election Day and officially giving Democrats a 60-seat supermajority unseen since the Carter administration.
With a slew of supporters, his wife, Franni, and their two children viewing from the Senate gallery, Franken put his hand on the bible used by the late Democratic Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone and said, "I do," to the oath of office delivered by Vice President Joe Biden.
“Congratulations, Senator," Biden said, prompting a standing ovation — along with some hoots and cheers — from the crowd. About one-quarter of the 100 senators attended the swearing-in, but the press gallery and visitors' gallery were packed. At a Democratic senators’ lunch later Tuesday afternoon, Franken received several standing ovations, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
And he didn’t attempt any humor, even behind closed doors.
“No he was serious and it was well received by everybody,” Schumer said. |
