DescriptionFormer Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot launched the first television ads of the 2004 governor's race Monday in a clear attempt to lengthen his lead in name recognition, and perhaps a subtler effort to maneuver around party activists less-than-thrilled with his candidacy.

Recent polls have shown that substantially more North Carolinians know Vinroot than the other six announced candidates competing to win the May 4 primary. But among party insiders, there is lingering resentment over Vinroot's 2000 loss to Democratic Gov. Mike Easley and concern that as a two-time loser -- Vinroot also ran for governor in 1996 -- he cannot win.

During the first six months of the year, Vinroot raised $16,300, compared with the $309,000 he had brought in by the same time four years ago. Vinroot would not say how much he has raised since then, and the next round of campaign finance reports are not due until January.
