DescriptionFrom his resume, you might think Bill Bradbury would be the front-runner in the Democratic race for governor.

He served as secretary of state for nine years, twice winning statewide election to the seat while also running (and losing) to then-Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., in 2002, a tough year for Democrats. He's also a former state Senate president with fourteen years of legislative experience.

In short, Bradbury has the kind of background that is standard Oregon gubernatorial training. Five of the last eight governors served in one of the other statewide offices in Salem and six of them were in the Legislature.

But nobody's hanging the front-runner logo on Bradbury. Since he first made it clear late last summer that he was serious about running for governor, he's been seen as just another of a long list of Democrats interested in what is regarded as a wide-open seat.

From what I gather by talking with Democratic insiders, a big part of it is concern over whether Bradbury can do the job. He was diagnosed in 1981 with multiple sclerosis, which affects the central nervous system, and for many years it wasn't evident to people who didn't know the gregarious Bradbury well. But in the last several years, he's started using a scooter and a cane and there are doubts about whether he has the needed stamina.
