Description | CONCORD - New Hampshire will soon become the sixth state in the nation to allow gays and lesbians to marry following the Legislature’s adoption of a compromise law today.
The 198-176 vote in support before the House of Representatives was fitting for a bill that had faced five close votes over the past three months.
Gay rights supporters in the gallery erupted in applause after House Speaker Terie Norelli, D-Portsmouth, announced the vote.
Gov. John Lynch is expected to sign the new proposal (HB 73) later today, along with two other related bills (HB 310 and HB 436) that offer religious protections for churches and their employees that don’t wish to take part in a same-sex marriage ceremony. |
