DescriptionRepublican Don McLeroy's nomination as chairman of the State Board of Education was rejected by the Senate Thursday after Democrats decried his lack of leadership and "endless culture wars" over evolution and other volatile topics. Voting strictly along party lines, the Senate refused to approve McLeroy on a 19 to 11 vote - two less than the two-thirds majority required for confirmation. Eddie Lucio, D-Brownsville, was present, not voting.

Several Democrats cited the recurring divisiveness on the board with McLeroy at the helm and his resistance to the views of educators and education experts on curriculum and other matters. GOP senators rejected the criticism and accused the Democrats of holding an "inquisition" against the College Station Republican, who is a critic of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

Gov. Rick Perry, who nominated McLeroy, will now have to select another member of the board to serve as chairman. Whoever is picked will not have to face Senate confirmation until the 2011 legislative session, unless there is a special session before then.
