Description | SELMA -- Acknowledging that he is the underdog and has no campaign war chest, former Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. announced Friday that he will run for Congress from the 7th District.
Surrounded by about 100 supporters on the steps of the Federal Building in downtown Selma, Perkins expressed confidence that his grassroots campaign will be enough to win the Democratic nomination a year from now.
He served two terms as mayor, but lost a bid for a third term last year to George Evans, who had served as president of the City Council during the period Perkins was mayor. |
