DescriptionSan Francisco mayoral contender Gavin Newsom's campaign released a poll today showing its candidate safely ahead of rival Matt Gonzalez, following Tuesday night's release of a survey with a different result.

Newsom is up by more than 11 points, according to the latest round of numbers come from Decision Research, a national Democratic polling firm with offices in San Diego as well as the nation's capital.

The telephone interviews, completed with 500 likely voters on Monday and Tuesday, indicated that Newsom draws 51.6 percent to 40.4 percent for Gonzalez and 8 percent undecided. A summary of the findings released today says the pool of most likely voters is even more solidly in Newsom's column but does not offer specifics.

The poll has a margin of error of 4.4 percent, but Newsom spokesman Eric Jaye points out that this survey relied on registered voters and personal interviews rather than an automated dialing system that allows whoever picks up the phone to participate.

The poll released Tuesday evening by SurveyUSA found Gonzalez leading Newsom by 52 percent to 45 percent, a greater margin than the also leading numbers same outfit gave Gonzalez two weeks before.

But Gonzalez spokesman Ross Mirkirimi said today that whatever the dueling polls may show, his team was focused on its efforts to come in first on Dec. 9. "We will keep our eyes on the prize," he said.
