DescriptionThe New York Post’s Fred Dicker is reporting that Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) will soon be announcing that he’ll be challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in a Democratic primary.

According to one Democratic source familiar with his thinking, Israel has decided to run for the Senate but there’s not yet a formal timetable for an announcement. And if he jumps in, sources say he would win support from many of his downstate colleagues in Congress, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) who has been one of Gillibrand's leading critics.

Israel would be one of the few Democrats who could credibly challenge Gillibrand in a primary. As a visible Long Island-area congressman, he would be well-positioned to win votes in the city and the New York City suburbs that comprise much of the Democratic primary vote. And he is a very strong fundraiser, and banked over $1.7 million in his campaign account at the end of March.

An Israel Senate campaign would probably not sit well with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y), who has been one of the leading champions of his new (junior) Senate colleague. But it’s an open question over whether he would actively intervene to prevent Israel from jumping in the race.
