Description | WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department moved to drop charges against two former employees of a pro-Israel lobbying group accused of disclosing defense secrets, saying it was unlikely the government would win the case.
The case against Steven J. Rosen and Keith Weissman brought in 2005 had implications for the thousands of lobbyists and journalists whose work centers on obtaining government information. Some critics viewed the case as a warning shot by the Bush administration aimed at stopping leaks about national-security policies.
The case is the second high-profile criminal prosecution to collapse in recent weeks. Last month, the department withdrew its corruption case against former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, after acknowledging missteps by prosecutors. |
