DescriptionGov. David Paterson received a hero's welcome this morning at the opening rally for "LGBT Equality and Justice Day," during which some 2,000 activists will fan out over the Capitol complex to lobby both Democratic and GOP senators on gay marriage, GENDA and the Dignity for All Students Act.

Paterson was introduced by Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Alan Van Capelle, who said getting into today's event was "harder than getting tickets to a Madonna concert," noting that even though he had shut down registration weeks ago, some 300 unregistrered people showed up in Albany this morning begging to be let in.

Van Capelle called Paterson "New York's governor, our governor, the next governor." The crowd responded by jumping to its feet with wild chants of "David! David! David!"

Paterson welcomed them all and said: "When you leave, Albany will have pride."

The governor, who recently introduced a program bill to legalize gay marriage as part of his political comeback effort, then went into a long riff on how "sometimes it takes a disciplined effort and some losses to get a victory."
