DescriptionU.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu is expected to announce at a 2:30 news conference that she will recommend that Jim Letten retain his post as U.S. Attorney for Louisiana's Eastern District, according to several sources.

She is also expected to name Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Michael Bagneris as her choice to fill a federal judgeship, sources said.

Landrieu, the state's ranking Democrat, joins Republican Sen. David Vitter in supporting Letten for the post. With both Louisiana senators in agreement, Letten is virtually guaranteed to retain his spot as the Justice Department's top man in the New Orleans area. President Barack Obama, however, has the final say.

While Landrieu came under considerable pressure to retain Letten, today's announcement is sure to disappoint some Democrats and African-American leaders who have been urging her to choose a qualified Democrat who would also be committed to prosecuting public corruption. New Orleans attorney Brian Jackson, a longtime federal prosecutor, was among those rumored to be a top candidate.

Letten, who is been widely praised for his aggressive prosecution of corrupt government officials, has held the job of chief federal prosecutor since he was appointed in April 2001 to head the office on an interim basis. At the time, former President George W. Bush was searching for a replacement for Democrat Eddie Jordan, and Letten was viewed as a competent fill-in.
