DescriptionRepublican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk said today he will make a decision by month's end on whether to run for the U.S. Senate or governor next year.

The North Shore Republican said he was waiting to see whether there would be a special election for the Senate seat now held by Democrat Roland Burris, who was appointed by Rod Blagojevich after the former governor was accused of trying to sell the seat.

Kirk, who made a speech today to the City Club of Chicago, said anyone thinking of moving up from Congress will have to do a "gut check" because they would have to give up their seat to run for Senate next year.

Kirk has indicated in the past that he was leaning towards the Senate and away from a run for governor. Running again for Congress also remains an option.
