DescriptionGa. Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, the acknowledged front runner and odds on favorite to win the 2010 GOP gubernatorial nomination, withdrew from the race today, citing health reasons. Cagle said he will stand for re-election for Lt. Governor instead.

The race for Georgia Governor, on the Republican side, is now turned upside down and inside out.

Sec. of State Karen Handel stands to gain support, as does Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine. Cobb County Commission Chairman Sam Olens, a moderate, may now get in the race. Tifton County House Rep. Austin Scott is also running, but is seen by insiders as the longest shot of them all.

The big question now is Ga. House Speaker Pro-Tem Mark Burkhalter. If he decides to make a bid himself, he may become the man to beat in short order. Burkhalter is said to be seriously considering the race. If he gets in, all bets are off. Burkhalter's fund raising ability, popularity among conservatives and deep support state-wide would make him an immediate force to be reckoned with.
