DescriptionAfter agreeing to meet with someone near the corner of South Rampart and Gravier streets, a 30-year-old New Orleans man was shot in the back of the head and killed this morning, New Orleans Police Department officials said.

Torey T. Coleman, who was clad in a red T-shirt and St. Louis Cardinals cap, died before paramedics could get to him, said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner's chief investigator.

Detectives believe Coleman spent the night walking around in the French Quarter, Assisant Police Superintendent Marlon Defillo said. When he was called over by someone to the meeting spot, in the Central Business District, he was accompanied by at least one woman, Defillo added.

Coleman loitered at the spot for a short time. Then, a brown-skinned man in a burgundy-colored jacket, jeans, and black-and-white tennis shoes met with him. They got into some sort of discussion, which ended abruptly when the suspect pulled out a gun, fired a bullet into the back of the victim's head and ran off.

Someone nearby called 911 at about 7:12 a.m., Defillo said.

"We believe they knew each other," Defillo said. "This was not a random act of violence. (Coleman) was the intended target."

The suspect was last seen running toward Baronne Street. Police are examining the tapes from security cameras belonging to businesses in the area, Defillo said. Detectives were also questioning several witnesses and acquaintances of both the gunman and the victim by 8:45 a.m., Defillo said.

The victim was gunned down near The Commons Bar and Restaurant. Above it is a multi-level parking garage. Just down the block stands the Holiday Inn, on the corner of Gravier and Loyola streets.

"Incidents like these are rare (in the CBD)," which is one of the lowest crime areas in the city, Defillo said. "They're uncommon because of the amount of patrols in the area."
