Description | The Iowa Supreme Court says it will release its much-anticipated ruling on the state's gay marriage ban on Friday.
Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights organization, filed a lawsuit in 2005 on behalf of six gay and lesbian Iowa couples who were denied marriage licenses.
Oral arguments were presented before the high court in December and many didn't expect a ruling for a year or more.
A Polk County district court judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in 2007. But the county attorney's office says the Legislature should decide the issue.
The suit names Timothy Brien, then recorder and registrar in Polk County, the state's most populous county. It claims the ban violates the constitutional rights of due process and equal protection. |
