DescriptionFamily Research Council President Tony Perkins has decided against challenging Sen. David Vitter in the 2010 Louisiana GOP Senate primary.

Perkins mailed Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere a letter telling him he would not pursue the race.

“I am grateful for those who’ve encouraged me to consider returning to elected office, but this is not the right time,” he said. “Along those lines, I would like members of the State Central Committee to know that I support Senator David Vitter’s bid for reelection in 2010.”

Perkins had said that he was considering a primary challenge to Vitter. He has also reportedly suggested the Vitter would be vulnerable to a challenge from the right after being named in the 2007 “D.C. Madam” prosecution scandal.

Perkins’s withdrawal is undoubtedly a boost to Vitter’s reelection prospects. Perkins is the second challenger already to bow out of the race, following former Rep. John Cooksey (R). Both Perkins and Cooksey ran and lost in the open 2002 GOP primary.

Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne also may challenge Vitter. A recent DailyKos/Research 2000 poll showed Vitter leading 43 percent to 32 in that match-up.

Among Democrats, Rep. Don Cazayoux, state Sen. Rob Marioneaux and business Jim Bernhard have been mentioned as candidates.
