Description"The first returns in the 2003 mayoral race are in, and it appears to be a tight contest between Mayor Street and Republican challenger Sam Katz.

Street had $2.3 million in the bank to start his reelection bid, according to campaign-finance reports filed last week with the state. But Katz's campaign claimed yesterday to have raised a little less than $2.1 million since Jan. 15, putting him closer than even he expected.

"I'm surprised and delighted that the support has come in so fast and so strong," Katz said. "We're going to be very competitive."

It was important for Katz, as the challenger, to score a perceived victory with early fund-raising success, his advisers said. They were goaded last month when Street supporters brought in Gov. Rendell to pitch the mayor to business leaders, which the Katz camp interpreted as an effort to attack his potential money supply."
