Description | Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) is calling on fellow Democrat Roland Burris to resign from the U.S. Senate seat once filled by President Barack Obama.
"I would ask my good friend Sen. Roland Burris . . . to step aside and resign from his office," said Quinn. "Let's put this behind us."
Quinn, who made his comments at a Friday news conference in Chicago, said the controversy surrounding Burris' appointment has cast a shadow over his service in the U.S. Senate.
In addition to calling on Burris to resign, Quinn announced his support for state legislation which would require future U.S. Senate vacancies in Illinois to be filled by special election rather than by gubernatorial appointment.
