DescriptionJoan and Howard Ng didn't expect to become minor celebrities in their hometown.

Howard had spent his life as a scientist with Environment Canada before he retired and Joan is a teacher and owns an art gallery in Burlington, Ont. Despite their relatively inconspicuous profiles, the couple became the talk of town last year.

That's when almost everyone they knew, among others, found out they are related to one of the world's most famous figures - Barack Obama.

Howard and Joan's son, Konrad, is married to the American president's half-sister, Maya Soetoro, and that has created a bit of a buzz among their neighbours.

Joan Ng says even visitors to her gallery will ask her, "Are you related to Obama and I say, 'yes.' The response, she says, is invariably an incredulous, 'Are you kidding?'"

The couple says they are taking their brush with celebrity in stride, noting that while Obama and his wife Michelle may be internationally renowned, they are just family to the Ngs.
