DescriptionWe lost a rising star in Davis, but got another one in James. I really like her and think she will absolutely rise to something. Maybe the next black mayor.

>LETITIA JAMES, who captured a New York City Council seat on the Working Families Party line, is recalling a political opponent's remark just two weeks ago. "He said, `Why don't you start a family? Why don't you find a man?" says Ms. James, a lawyer who is 44, single and not the sort to be baited.

Ms. James, who is nearly six feet tall, pauses before going on. "I told him — no, I'm not going to tell you what I told him," she says, shaking her head, refusing to name the opponent.

In any event, Ms. James emerged victorious over three male contenders as the first third-party candidate to win a Council seat in three decades. The Working Families Party achieved a landmark victory, having been founded only in 1998, and Ms. James, a longtime Democratic Party insider, finds herself in the spotlight.
