DescriptionTammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran who graduated from McKinley High School and the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, was nominated by President Obama yesterday to serve as assistant secretary of public and intergovernmental affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Duckworth, currently director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, is a major in the state National Guard and lost both legs and partial use of an arm in 2004 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the helicopter she was piloting in Iraq.

"President Obama has made a fine choice," said Sen. Dan Akaka, D-Hawai'i, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. "She is a rising star and a source of inspiration for the newest generation of veterans." Duckworth could have her confirmation hearing before the committee by the end of the month.
