DescriptionIn his opposition to campaign-finance reform, Iowa House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Democrat, has attracted a questionable ally in Sean Parnell, president of the Center for Competitive Politics.

In a Dec. 27 letter to the editor, Parnell praises McCarthy for calling Voter Owned Iowa Clean Elections (VOICE) "flat-out bad."

Before joining the center, Parnell was vice president for external affairs at Heartland Institute. Heartland opposes lots of key Democratic priorities, including public schools, Medicaid, Medicare and any governmental action to address climate change, which a Heartland publication calls "the global warming scam."

Parnell has Iowa connections. He was on the payroll for Republican Greg Ganske's campaign that unseated Democrat Neal Smith and later worked for Ganske in his campaign against Democrat Tom Harkin.

Plenty of moderate Republicans and independents support VOICE. The Iowa Democratic Party is solidly behind it, and Barack Obama ran his campaign for president without a dime from any lobbyist or political-action committee.

McCarthy: When it comes to money in politics, do you stand with the right-wing interests who represent corporate America, or with Democrats and other rank-and-file voters hungry for change and a new direction in campaign finance?
