DescriptionAt Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's urging, a group of his supporters has pulled the plug on a ballot proposal to merge staggered city elections, a plan that would have extended the terms of the mayor and four City Council members by two years.

Gordon said he knew of the plan for several months and that the Phoenix Election Consolidation Committee had pursued it "with my concurrence."

Last week, group organizers filed paperwork with the city allowing them to begin collecting the 14,700 signatures needed to qualify the initiative for the city's September ballot. The committee argued that putting all mayoral and council races on the same election cycle would boost voter turnout and save the city $1 million every four years.

But Gordon said he asked organizers to abandon their efforts after stories in The Arizona Republic and Phoenix New Times raised questions about whether the initiative was designed to benefit the mayor.
