DescriptionWashington -- For backing up his fight for justice for animals on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and in its dining room with his commitment to a healthy and humane vegan lifestyle, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich from Cleveland, Ohio, has won the Most Progressive Member of Congress category in PETA's sixth annual Proggy Awards. Kucinich will receive a framed certificate and will be featured on PETA's award-winning Web site PETA.org. PETA's Proggy Awards ("Proggy" is for "progress") recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.

A dedicated advocate of human and animal rights, Kucinich has educated his fellow members of Congress about the link between violence against animals and violence against humans. He works to promote animal-friendly legislation on Capitol Hill and has opened an inquiry into the abuse of animals at one of the nation's largest meat-packing plants. He has taken on the Chinese dog fur industry, and he has called for increased funding to enforce the only federal legislation governing conditions for animals used in experiments--the Animal Welfare Act. Kucinich is also a true-green environmentalist who is helping to save the planet from methane pollution and conserve its water resources one Earth-friendly vegan meal at a time.

"Dennis might be a 'menace' to animal abusers, but to animals, he's an angel," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "If other lawmakers adopted his impassioned defense of victims of injustice--no matter their race, gender, or species--we'd truly have a kinder and gentler nation."

This year, Proggy Awards have gone to producers and marketers of vegan foods, shoes, and cruelty-free personal-care products; a cookbook author; and an animal-friendly production studio.
