Description | PHOENIX (AP) - Newly re-elected state Rep. Steve Gallardo says he will resign rather than take his seat when the Legislature convenes for its 2009 session on Monday.
The Democrat who represents south Phoenix says he plans to start his own political firm to help others win election and to push initiative campaigns.
Gallardo was re-elected to a fourth term representing District 13 in November. The 40-year-old was minority whip last session but lost out on his bid to remain in the leadership.
Gallardo said Friday that the larger Republican majority this year, the redrawing of district boundaries after the 2010 census and the need to earn more than the $24,000 House members earn contributed to his decision.
His replacement will be selected from a list Democrats forward to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. |
