Description | It's a gripping story, isn't it, Bill Richardson's rise and stall.
We have great detail on his setback courtesy of NMI [New Mexico Independent -- ed.] writers Heath Haussamen, Tripp Jennings, Marjorie Childress, Gwyneth Doland, Matthew Reichback and David Alire Garcia. I want to consider here what it tells us about the governor and ourselves.
A cautionary note: The punishment has already leapfrogged the crime, if there was any. Because as there came to light a federal investigation into whether a financial company paid for New Mexico state contracts, the governor lost a seat in the Obama Cabinet.
Whatever its legal outcomes, the probe has already spotlighted New Mexico's pay-to-play traditions; the way we finance elections here and nationally and not least, how Americans pay for public projects. |
