DescriptionShe's his most trusted adviser, managing his nascent political career. At every public event, she's perched at the edge of her seat watching every move like a protective parent.

Annivory Calvert is just that to state Rep. Coleman Young II, a mother whom some fear pushed her 26-year-old son with the historic name into the Detroit mayor's race long before he is ready. His father is the legendary Coleman A. Young, the city's late former mayor whose battle with Calvert became national news after she sued him to prove paternity.

The mother and 6-year-old son left Detroit -- his alias was Joel Loving then -- and returned 16 years later as Coleman Young II, with many speculating that political aspirations motivated the use of the name his mother claims he always had from birth. Moving from temp jobs to making sandwiches at Subway to winning a seat in the state House, Young is running a grassroots mayoral campaign that he says he's serious about winning.

"It's obvious she's had significant influence on his involvement in the political process," said Bill Brooks, a former General Motors Corp. vice president and onetime mayoral candidate who is involved in former City Councilman Nicholas Hood III's campaign for mayor.

That famous name, Brooks says, carries a burden. "You're talking about a one of a kind," he said of the father. "Boy, that's a heavy burden to put on a young man to have to follow in those footsteps."
