The effort to turn around Rock Island County's one-party political climate continues today when the
GOPPrecinct Committee Persons Search Committee meet for the second time in less than a month to talk strategy.
The meeting of the committee, created by the Rock Island County Republican Party to help it recruit and establish a stronger local presence, will be at 9 a.m. at Republican headquarters, 1721 5th Ave., Suite 100 in Moline.
"We've put everything we've hashed out into a plan and we'll start action (Saturday) to recruit for the 12 County Board seats up for reelection in 2010," Rock Island County Republican Party Chairman Susan Carpentier said Friday. "Tomorrow, we'll put things into action so the people willing to work can get to work."
Currently, nearly every partisan elected office in the county is held by a Democrat.
Of the 25 County Board seats, only one is held by a Republican-- District 1 Rep. Richard Morthland, who was elected in November's General Election. Democrats also hold all county-wide offices, legislative seats and most city council posts that are filled on a partisan basis.
"Our priority right now is those County Board seats up for re-election in 2010," she said. "We'll be calling people in those districts to see if they want to get involved, whether it be as a volunteer, a precinct committeemen or even a candidate."
The fact that the party had virtually no candidates on the November ballot actually spurred interest, she said.
"Several people have come to our regular meetings since the General Election asking what the Rock Island County Republican Party is doing or not doing," Mrs. Carpentier said.
"I think they realized, to actually criticize our efforts, they had to get involved. We can all gripe about things, but until you actually get involved, nothing gets any better."
