Description | Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky said Tuesday that fellow Illinois Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush introduced an “unfortunate” racial tone to the debate over Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s pick of former state Attorney General Roland Burris to fill President-elect Barack Obama's Senate seat.
“I would ask you not to hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointor,” Rush said during the press conference. “Roland Burris is worthy. He has not, in 20 years of public service, had one iota of taint on his record as a public servant. He is an esteemed member of this state and this community.”
Schakowsky, appearing on CNN’s “Situation Room,” said that Rush should not have injected race into the discussion about Burris, who would replace Obama as the Senate’s only black member.
“I think the use of ‘lynch’ was really unfortunate because certainly it adds an unfortunate, I think, racial tone to this,” Schakowsky said. “It is not about lynching Roland Burris at all. And actually it’s not about race at all.” |
