DescriptionJohn Crowley, a biotech executive whose extraordinary life story fueled hopes that he would run for governor in 2009, will not be a candidate, a spokesman said yesterday.

That narrows the field of Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's potential Republican challengers.

Conservative activist Steven Lo negan and Assemblyman Rick Merkt (R-Morris) are the only declared GOP candidates. Still unde cided is former U.S. attorney Christopher Christie, who party leaders say would be the favorite if he runs.

Crowley, 41, decided to "put an end to the speculation" this weekend with calls to local officials who had urged him to run, said his spokesman, Bill Spadea.

"When you have so many people at a local level that are looking to someone like John, that are asking and encouraging ... it was hard for him not to give them due consideration," Spadea said.

But Crowley ultimately decided to forgo a 2009 run because of work and family commitments, and a be lief that the New Jersey GOP should be built from the ground up, Spadea said. He said he and Crowley, founders of a grassroots group focused on electing local candidates, plan to start another organization to promote Republican solutions to creating jobs, lowering the tax burden and making New Jersey more affordable.

"You can lead change not just by being a candidate," Spadea said, adding that Crowley "will be 100 percent behind whoever the nominee of the party is."

Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce (R-Morris) said he hopes Crowley's decision helps Christie, noting the former U.S. attorney would not have to spend as much on a primary and have more against the wealthy Corzine.

Sen. Joseph Kyrillos (R-Mon mouth), a Christie ally, said he is "on his own timetable" for his decision on a run for governor.

Crowley also opted against run ning for the U.S. Senate against Frank Lautenberg this spring after briefly entertaining the idea. He has not made any decisions about 2012, the next Senate race, Spadea said.
