Description | The 538 presidential electors gathered Monday in the 50 states and the District of Columbia to participate in the ceremonial but constitutionally mandated task of casting the votes to certify Barack Obama’s election as president.
Obama was expected to receive 365 electoral votes — well above the 270 needed to win the presidency and matching the number projected for Obama on Election Day Nov. 4, when he won the popular vote in 28 states and the District of Columbia, defeating Republican nominee John McCain nationwide by 53 percent to 46 percent. A state receives one electoral vote for each of its two U.S. senators and one electoral vote for each of its members of the House of Representatives.
Monday’s Electoral College meetings were pro forma, and there were no reports of renegade electors who didn’t vote in accord with the popular vote outcome in their states. While there is no constitutional provision or federal law that requires an elector to vote for a certain candidate, some states have laws that sanction the occasional “faithless electors.” |
