Description | He's made it official. Kansas state Sen. Mark Gilstrap of KCK has left the Democratic Party, officially registering as a Republican. He said this morning that conservative Democrats like himself are no longer welcome in a party led by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
"It's not a defection," he said this morning. "I was kicked out. After what transpired with the governor's actions in the primary election, I felt like she was saying to me 'you're no longer welcome in my clubhouse.'"
Gilstrap found himself at odds with Sebelius and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka on a handful of hot-button issues. Gilstrap supported the state's concealed weapons law, and he's voted in favor of restrictions on abortion and bills to authorize coal-fired power plants in Western Kansas.
Gilstrap lost his re-election bid this year in the primary after Sebelius and Hensley supported Democrat Kelly Kultala. Kultala ended up winning the seat last month. |
