Description(CNN) -- Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s lawyer said Wednesday he now assumes Jackson is the person known as "Candidate 5" in the criminal complaint against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

James Montgomery Sr. did not confirm Jackson's identity, but said he made his assumption based on conversations with U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and information in the criminal complaint.

Montgomery said the U.S. attorney confirmed that Jackson is not a target of the investigation and that Jackson never authorized anyone to seek the governor's support in exchange for anything.

"I've done nothing wrong," Jackson said as he left his office Wednesday afternoon. "A lot of people are going to be touched and affected by this process, but I am confident that we have engaged no wrongdoing."

Fitzgerald said none of the people mentioned as Senate candidates is accused of wrongdoing.

"People should not cast aspersions on people who are discussed on wiretap or bug tape," he said.
