DescriptionTORONTO — Despite a concerted effort in Ottawa to make Michael Ignatieff the interim Liberal leader, rival Bob Rae signalled Monday that he'll hang in as a candidate for the party's top job and push for a selection process that consults the broader party membership.

Political jostling began Monday after Liberal Leader Stephane Dion said he'll resign as soon as a new leader is chosen.

Ignatieff's camp received a considerable boost when, not long after, New Brunswick MP Dominic LeBlanc withdrew from the race and threw his support behind him.

With the Liberals scrambling to replace Dion before January 27, when the Conservatives are scheduled to unveil a budget which could see their minority government toppled, Liberal MPs and senators were to meet Wednesday to name an interim leader.

On Monday, Rae said it's up to the party membership to decide who becomes the next leader and an interim leader would have an unfair advantage in the race.

``It's better to have the party as a whole involved in finding a solution than it is to having a solution imposed from above,'' Rae said at his constituency office in Toronto.
