| Description | Mayor Mark Funkhouser's wife, Gloria Squitiro, said a member of the City Council is behind the so-called Mammygate lawsuit.
In her deposition last week, Squitiro blamed Councilman Terry Riley for pushing former mayoral aide Ruth Bates to sue the city, Funkhouser and his wife. Bates, who is black, said Squitiro, who is white, called her "mammy," and she is claiming racial and sexual harassment.
"I really feel that Ruth was taken advantage of," Squitiro said in her deposition. "I think Ruth was put up to this."
When Bates was working for Funkhouser's mayoral campaign in 2007, she told Squitiro that she was getting complaints about Funkhouser, Squitiro said.
"She told me she was being harassed by people in her community" for supporting Funkhouser, Squitiro said. "Then it went to Terry Riley. And after that, I don't know who would have put her up to it. |
