DescriptionOTTAWA — One huge question mark hangs over opposition parties’ efforts to cobble together a coalition government: Who would be prime minister?

Ordinarily, the top job would be expected to go to the leader of the Liberals, the strongest of the three opposition parties.

But Stephane Dion has announced his intention to resign as Liberal leader as soon as his successor is chosen May 2, at a convention in Vancouver. Three leadership hopefuls — Michael Ignatieff, Bob Rae and Dominic LeBlanc — are already campaigning feverishly for the job.

So what happens to the leadership contest if the Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois reach an agreement to defeat the Conservative minority and form a coalition government?

"We’re in new territory," says one senior Liberal official. "We’re going to have to play this as we go along."

Both the Bloc and NDP have made it clear that, as far as they’re concerned, the uncertain state of the Liberal leadership is none of their business and isn’t a factor in trying to strike a deal. They insist it’s something Liberals need to settle among themselves.
