Description | ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Lt. Gov. Diane Denish assured New Mexicans on Monday that should she become governor, the transition will be very smooth and she's ready to take the lead.
Denish is in line to head the state should Gov. Bill Richardson become President-elect Barack Obama's commerce secretary. The governor's office had no comment on reports that his nomination will be announced by Obama after Thanksgiving.
His departure would make Denish the state's first female governor. It remains uncertain when Richardson would permanently turn over the powers of the governorship to Denish.
If made governor, Denish would appoint a new lieutenant governor.
"That's premature to talk about," Denish said. "There are probably a number of qualified people who I'd be interested in, but it's premature to talk about."
According to speculation in some state political circles, state auditor Hector Balderas could be the replacement. |
