DescriptionHow bad does New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson want to be a part of the Next Big Thing in American politics? Apparently enough so to accept what is effectively a political demotion.

Richardson is on track to become President-elect Barack Obama’s secretary of commerce -- not a bad gig but also not an A-List position a la Treasury, Justice, State and Defense.

It’s all the more remarkable given the New Mexico governor’s resume. He served as a member of the House Democratic leadership in Congress, was Energy Secretary and Ambassador to the U.N. under President Clinton, and is now in his second term at the helm in Santa Fe.

Oh, and he also spent much of last year running for president and emphatically denying that he was interested in anything but the top job.

But having been passed over for veep and secretary of state, he’s now not only taking a cabinet post but arguably a lesser one than he enjoyed in the Clinton administration. What gives?

Richardson is a pol’s pol – he owns the Guinness Book record for number of hands shaken in one day – and loves being in the capital swirl. Even while governor, he was frequently seen out and about in Washington. He knows where the political action will be in the years ahead and would rather be a second-tier player than altogether out of the game entirely.
