Description | Enthusiastic voters nationwide flocked to the polls, casting more ballots for president than ever before and shooting the turnout percentage higher than it has been in generations.
But one of the most highly anticipated presidential elections didn't really energize voters in Utah, an indication that some Republicans were not excited about John McCain's campaign.
Turnout in the state actually declined, according to unofficial results, reversing a recent upward trend and surprising political insiders and experts alike.
"It was really disappointing," said Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen, who saw turnout drop from 76 percent in 2004 to 65 percent this year. She added, though, that there are thousands of provisional and absentee ballots yet to be counted. |
