DescriptionSenator Ted Stevens “has broken his trust with the people” and should step down, his fellow Republican Senator John McCain said on Tuesday, a day after Mr. Stevens was convicted of violating federal ethics laws for failing to report tens of thousands of dollars in gifts and services he had received from friends.

Senator Ted Stevens left court in Washington after the guilty verdict on Monday. “I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all,” said Mr. McCain, his party’s presidential candidate.
