| Description | CHICAGO -- Barack Obama is giving the "closing argument" of his presidential bid in the decisive state of Ohio, where he lost once this year and finds himself in a scrap again.
Fresh off rollicking rallies in Colorado, Obama faces a more sobering reality in Ohio. Polls show a tight race in the state that determined President Bush's re-election in 2004.
The longest presidential contest in history is down to just eight days, with Obama and Republican contender John McCain dueling for the electoral riches of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Obama's struggles to connect with white working-class voters in Ohio helped lead to a crushing loss to Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primaries. Economic concerns are even more acute now with the country in a financial crisis and perhaps headed for deep recession.
And as Ohio goes, often goes history. No Democratic contender for the presidency has won without Ohio's support in nearly 50 years. |
