Description | The New York City Council passed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's bill extending term limits on a 29-22 vote Thursday afternoon, besting the majority needed to approve the proposal by three votes.
Unless there is a successful legal challenge of the measure, the council vote means that Bloomberg and other officials now serving their second consecutive four-year term would be able to seek a third term in the 2009 municipal elections.
Both supporters and opponents of the bill have said they expect legal action after the council vote.
In voting for the bill, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, like other supporters, maintained that seasoned leaders are best suited to move the city forward through the fiscal crisis.
