Description | "She wasn't on the ballot, but Christie Whitman was as big a factor in last week's Republican defeats in the legislative election as any candidate. She says Republicans paid the price for running away from her.
Like no former governor before, Whitman was the target of an aggressive blame game launched by Governor McGreevey even before he took office.
McGreevey and fellow Democrats labored to make sure New Jersey voters blamed everything that was wrong with the state budget and economy on Whitman and the Republicans, who ran the state for most of the 1990s.
This happened even though many of the big-ticket items driving the budget crisis, such as a massive boost to urban school aid, a $6 billion school construction program, and generous homeowner rebates, had Democratic support."
