Description | A veteran Mercer County legislator yesterday was rebuffed in her bid to win a share of the state Senate's second-most powerful position.
The rejection by the Senate's Democratic caucus angered black senators, who said the party needs to be more open to minorities and women.
The gender and racial rift occurred when the caucus turned back the black senators' attempt to have Sen. Shirley Turner of Lawrence share the post of Democratic majority leader with Sen. Bernard F. Kenny Jr. of Hoboken.
