Description | The people of Massachusetts launched a political revolt Tuesday, giving smashing victories to Dr. John R. Silber as the Democratic candidate for governor and William F. Weld as the Republican contender.
The result sets up a November election that is too wildly unpredictable to forecast, citizens and political experts here said today, because outrage remains the public mood, and the candidates do not fit the normal political labels. Dr. Silber, in fact, the acerbic president of Boston University, is widely seen as a Republican running as a Democrat, and Mr. Weld, a patrician former United States Attorney, is often viewed as a moderate Republican.
''This wasn't an election, it was a revolution,'' said Cathy Walsh, a bank teller in Boston. Ms. Walsh, a lifelong Democrat, said she had voted for Dr. Silber ''because he tells the truth and is not afraid to take action.'' But she said she may vote for Mr. Weld in November ''because I really want to send a message to the politicians. Things are so bad, let's fire everybody and start over again.'' |
