DescriptionBATON ROUGE (AP) -- The two main contenders in the U.S. Senate race swapped jabs at their first debate, in a race that has become increasingly negative and attack-oriented.

Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu called her opponent, Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy, a political opportunist who switched parties last year to try to help him win the Senate seat.

Kennedy called Landrieu a tax-and-spend liberal who doesn't represent Louisiana values and who is part of an ineffective Washington political system.

Landrieu framed herself as a moderate who has bucked her Democratic Party on votes that were critical to Louisiana. Kennedy framed himself as a conservative reformer pushing change.

Monday's debate at the Press Club of Baton Rouge is the first of four planned meetings between Landrieu and Kennedy. The election is Nov. 4.
