Description | Republican Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest said Thursday evening that he is not endorsing Barack Obama for president, despite remarks he made Wednesday on a radio show.
In an interview with WYPR-FM, Baltimore’s National Public Radio station, Gilchrest praised Obama, the Democratic nominee. CNNPolitics.com interpreted the comments to mean he was “endorsing” Obama, but Gilchrest later rejected that wording.
The nine-term lawmaker from Maryland’s 1st District told Congressional Quarterly that he was simply answering a question about whether Obama and running mate Joseph R. Biden Jr. had the qualities necessary to run the country. Gilchrest said people “should just think about who they elect for president.” Earlier this year, he had expressed support for Republican nominee John McCain . |
