DescriptionThe Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is airing ads supporting the party's candidate in Arizona's 1st Congressional District race, but the GOP is not doing the same for its nominee.

Karen Hanretty, communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the group believes Sydney Hay is a strong candidate who could win the seat without the committee's financial backing.

”We don't need to spend resources on all of these races, and simply because some are strong enough to sustain a victory without our financial assistance,'' Hanretty said. ”And we're certainly hoping that's the case in that district.''

National Republicans have backed three-term Congressman Rick Renzi with funding in the past, and not doing so with Hay's run might signal that she's not worth the investment, said Fred Solop, a political pollster at Northern Arizona University.

Kirkpatrick has raised nearly three times as much money as Hay in the election.
