DescriptionThe Louisiana Sheriff’s Association voted Aug. 8 to endorse Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-New Orleans, in her bid for re-election. In a joint statement, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Jeff Hingle and West Baton Rouge Sheriff Mike Cazes said Landrieu “always stands by law enforcement, and now we are going to stand by her.”

Each sheriff controls a considerable budget and has department employees at his disposal to assist the endorsed candidate. This endorsement will translate into actual votes for Landrieu. It will also allow her to state in the campaign that she is a “friend of law enforcement.”

The sheriffs credit Landrieu with securing more than $120 million in grants for their departments during her current term in office. When the sheriff’s association endorsed Landrieu in 2002, it was the first time the group had endorsed an elected official.

“She didn’t let us down. That’s why we are proud to stand with her again,” Hingle and Cazes said.

Hingle is the latest GOP official to endorse Landrieu and joins an expanding list of Republican officeholders crossing party lines. The list includes St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain and Parish President Kevin Davis.

Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy is trying to unseat Landrieu but he will need a strong showing in GOP strongholds to win. One reason for the Republican endorsements is that these elected officials credit her for her performance post-Katrina fighting for federal funds crucial to rebuilding. Republican activists are not happy with the GOP endorsements for Landrieu.

The St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee considered a resolution condemning the Landrieu endorsements, but it was defeated because committee members were worried about offending the powerful elected officials.
